What to Do If You Miss the Pickup or Delivery of Your Parcel?

What to Do If You Miss the Pickup or Delivery of Your Parcel ?

Missing a parcel pickup or a delivery attempt is more common than most people expect. Couriers operate within set time windows, and if nobody is available when the driver arrives, the outcome depends on the carrier's specific policy. Here is exactly what happens and what you should do.

If You Miss a Pickup

When a driver arrives at your address for a scheduled collection and finds nobody there, this is recorded as a failed pickup attempt. Most carriers will make one automatic reattempt, usually on the next business day, without any additional charge. After that, a second failed attempt typically triggers a cancellation or a rebooking fee.

If you know in advance that you will not be available, reschedule the pickup before the cutoff time — usually 24 hours before the collection window. This avoids the failed-attempt fee and keeps your shipment moving. On Cargosender, rescheduling is available directly from your order dashboard.

If You Miss a Delivery

When a delivery driver cannot complete a delivery because the recipient is not home, they will typically leave a 'sorry we missed you' card with instructions. Most carriers will then do one of the following: attempt delivery again the next business day, hold the parcel at a local depot or pickup point for collection, or both.

The holding period at a depot is usually five to seven business days. After that, if the parcel has not been collected and no contact made, it is returned to the sender. Return shipping fees usually apply.

How to Redirect or Reschedule a Delivery

Most major carriers — DHL, FedEx, UPS, GLS, DPD — offer delivery management tools via their websites or apps. Using your tracking number, you can often redirect a parcel to a different address, change the delivery date, or nominate a safe place or neighbour for the driver to leave it.

These changes must usually be made before the delivery attempt on the day in question, so act quickly once you see an 'out for delivery' notification.

What Happens to the Parcel If Nobody Collects It

If a parcel sits uncollected at a depot past the holding window, it is returned to the sender. The carrier charges a return-to-sender fee, which is separate from the original shipping cost. Depending on the carrier and route, this can range from €5 to €25.

To avoid this, respond to delivery notifications promptly. If you are on holiday or otherwise unavailable for an extended period, consider redirecting the shipment to a trusted address before it goes out for delivery.

Preventing Missed Collections and Deliveries

For pickups, book on days when you are certain to be present for the full collection window. For deliveries, share the tracking number with the recipient in advance so they can monitor the shipment and be available on the delivery day. Many carriers send SMS or email notifications when the parcel is out for delivery — make sure recipient contact details are accurate at the time of booking.
