Universal Packing Rules
No more than 5 cm gap on each side between item and box walls. Too much space = shifting; too little = no room for padding.
Every item needs at least 5 cm of bubble wrap, foam or air cushions around it on all six sides โ not just the top.
Close and shake the box. If anything moves or sounds loose, add more void fill. Nothing should shift in transit.
Place a second copy of the delivery address inside the box. If the outer label is damaged, the inner label is your backup.
Use at least 5 cm wide packaging tape. Apply the H-tape method: centre seam + both edges on top and bottom flaps. Never use string or thin tape.
Weigh and measure the sealed package before booking. Couriers re-weigh and charge any difference โ or reject overweight parcels at collection.
Packaging FAQ
What is the most important rule for packing international shipments?
โพ
The golden rule is: if you drop the closed box from waist height onto a hard floor, nothing inside should break. Carriers handle hundreds of thousands of parcels daily and drops, tilts and compression are inevitable. Use a sturdy double-wall cardboard box, fill all empty space with packing material, and shake the sealed box โ if you hear movement, add more void fill.
What size box should I use for international shipping?
โพ
Choose a box that is no more than 5 cm larger on each side than the item inside. Too much empty space means the item shifts during transit. Too small a box means insufficient padding around the item. Most couriers have maximum dimension limits (typically 120ร80ร80 cm for parcels) so always check before boxing oversized items.
What packing materials are best for international parcels?
โพ
For cushioning: bubble wrap (large bubbles for heavy items, small bubbles for delicate surfaces), foam sheets, and air pillows. For void fill: crumpled kraft paper, packing peanuts, or inflatable air cushions. For structure: double-wall corrugated cardboard boxes. Avoid newspaper as it transfers ink and provides poor cushioning.
How much bubble wrap do I need around a fragile item?
โพ
At least 5โ7 cm of cushioning on all six sides of the item. Wrap the item in at least two layers of bubble wrap (bubbles facing inward for delicate items, outward for heavier goods). Then pack inside a box with void fill so the wrapped item cannot move.
Do I need to declare how items are packed on the customs form?
โพ
No โ customs declarations describe the goods, not the packaging. However, if your goods require special packaging (e.g., dangerous goods with specific markings, temperature-controlled, or lithium batteries), there are carrier labelling requirements that must appear on the outside of the parcel.
