What Determines Your International Shipping Cost

Weight & volumetric weight

Air carriers charge by volumetric weight (L×W×H ÷ 5000 cm). Sea freight is priced by CBM (cubic metres). Always measure your box carefully.

Destination country & zone

Carriers divide the world into pricing zones. Zone 1 (EU) is cheapest; remote countries like islands or Pacific nations carry premium rates.

Speed of transit

Express services (1–3 days) cost 2–3× more than economy air (5–10 days). Sea freight is the most cost-effective for heavy or bulky cargo.

Fuel & security surcharges

Air carriers apply fuel and security surcharges that vary monthly. These are included in the quoted price you see on Cargosender.

Customs & import duties

Importing outside the EU may trigger import duties at destination. Duties depend on goods classification (HS code) and destination country tax rules.

Customs documentation

Commercial invoices, pro-forma invoices, and origin certificates must be accurate. Missing or incorrect paperwork delays clearance and may incur fees.

Volume Pricing

Monthly contract rates

Regular shippers with 10+ international shipments per month qualify for fixed contract rates — up to 45% below retail tariff.

Economy Air

Choose economy when possible

Economy air freight (5–10 days) can be 50% cheaper than express without significantly impacting most B2B or e-commerce deliveries.

Consolidation

Share container space

LCL (Less than Container Load) sea freight pools your cargo with others heading to the same destination — ideal for large but non-urgent shipments.

International Fuel, Security & Peak Surcharges

International air carriers (DHL, UPS, FedEx) apply both a fuel surcharge and a security surcharge on all cross-border air shipments. Combined, these typically add 20–35% to the base freight rate. During peak periods (November–January and Q4) carriers may also apply peak season surcharges. All surcharges are transparently included in the price you see when you request a quote on Cargosender — there are no post-booking surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are shipping prices calculated?

Prices are based on actual weight or volumetric weight (whichever is greater), the origin–destination pair, and the service level you choose (economy vs express). Fuel surcharges and remote-area fees may apply.

What is a fuel surcharge?

Carriers add a fuel surcharge to cover fluctuating fuel costs. It is recalculated monthly and expressed as a percentage of the base freight charge. On average this is 10–20% of the net rate.

Are there discounts for regular shippers?

Yes. Customers who ship regularly can negotiate fixed-rate contracts and volume-tier pricing. Contact our business team to discuss a tailored rate card.

Can I see the final price before booking?

Absolutely. Use the quote form above to compare live carrier prices. The price shown is the total you pay — no hidden fees.

Is insurance included in the price?

Basic carrier liability is included. You can add enhanced Cargosender shipment protection during checkout to cover the full declared value of your goods.

Do I need to fill in a customs form?

For shipments outside the EU (including the UK after Brexit), a customs declaration is required. Cargosender guides you through the process and pre-fills the declaration where possible based on the information you provide.

Who pays import duties at the destination?

By default, the receiver pays import duties and taxes. You can choose DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) on some carrier services, where duties are collected from you at the time of booking.
