EORI Number Format Checker

Check whether an EORI number follows the correct structure before using it on a customs declaration.

This checks structural format only, not whether the number is genuinely registered. For official verification, use the European Commission's EORI validation service.

What is an EORI Number?

EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) is a unique identification number required by any business that imports or exports goods commercially across the EU's external customs border — or, separately, the UK's border post-Brexit. It's issued free of charge by the customs authority of the country where your business is established, and appears on every commercial customs declaration alongside your commercial invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EORI number?

EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) is a unique ID number required for any business importing or exporting goods commercially into or out of the EU customs territory (and the UK, separately, post-Brexit). It's issued by the customs authority of an EU member state or the UK and used on every customs declaration.

Does this tool check my EORI number against the official database?

No — this is a format checker only, confirming your number follows the expected structure (a 2-letter country code followed by up to 15 alphanumeric characters). It does not connect to the European Commission's live EORI database. For genuine verification that a number is actually registered and active, use the official EU EORI validation service linked below.

Where do I apply for an EORI number?

Apply through the customs authority of the EU country where your business is established — in Portugal, this is the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT). If you're UK-based, apply through HMRC for a UK EORI number instead. Registration is free.

Do I need an EORI number for EU-to-EU shipments?

No — EORI numbers are only required for shipments crossing the EU's external customs border (importing from or exporting to a non-EU country, including the UK post-Brexit). Shipments between EU member states don't need one, since there's no customs declaration for intra-EU trade.

Can I use one EORI number for both the EU and the UK?

No — since Brexit, the UK operates its own separate EORI system. A business trading with both the EU and UK as non-EU/non-UK entities may need an EU EORI number and a UK EORI number separately, each issued by the respective customs authority.
