FAQ — Shipping to Hungary

Do I need customs documents to ship from Portugal to Hungary?

No — Hungary is an EU member state. Goods move freely within the EU single market with no customs declarations, import duties or border controls. A commercial invoice is standard for B2B shipments (include the Hungarian adószám for VAT reverse charge) but no customs declaration is required.

Why is Hungarian VAT so high?

Hungary's ÁFA at 27% is the EU's highest standard VAT rate, introduced in 2012 as part of fiscal consolidation measures. Despite the high standard rate, significant reduced rates apply: 5% on medicines, books and some food categories. For B2C sellers, the 27% ÁFA adds considerable cost to Hungarian consumer prices compared to lower-VAT EU markets.

Does Hungary use the Euro?

No — Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (HUF). Hungary is an EU member but has not adopted the Euro. The HUF is managed under a floating exchange rate regime by the Magyar Nemzeti Bank. B2B transactions are commonly invoiced in EUR, but B2C consumers generally prefer HUF-priced goods.

Which carrier is best for Portugal to Hungary?

For express: DHL Express delivers to Budapest in 1–2 days. For economy B2C: DPD via its Sprinter brand has the strongest Hungarian residential delivery network. For B2B industrial (automotive, electronics): GLS has strong coverage in Hungarian manufacturing cities. Compare rates on Cargosender for your parcel dimensions.

Is Hungary important for automotive supply chains?

Yes — Hungary is a major Central European automotive manufacturing hub. BMW opened its Debrecen plant (2025), joining Audi Győr, Mercedes-Benz Kecskemét and Hungarian Suzuki. These plants attract extensive B2B parts supply chains from across Europe. Portuguese automotive parts manufacturers (wiring harnesses, stamped metal, plastics) are active suppliers to Hungarian automotive factories.
