Freight Solutions for Portuguese Agriculture

Portugal's agriculture sector — olive oil, wine, cork, fresh fruit and vegetables — depends on time-sensitive logistics, particularly at harvest. Missing a shipping window for perishable produce can mean financial loss. Cargosender provides agricultural freight solutions with seasonal scheduling, refrigerated vehicles for fresh produce, and export documentation for non-EU markets.

Agricultural Logistics Capabilities

Harvest season capacity

Pre-booked vehicle capacity for grape, olive, and fruit harvest seasons — so your produce moves on schedule.

Refrigerated produce transport

Fresh fruit, vegetables, and cut flowers transported in refrigerated vehicles to maintain shelf life.

Export documentation

Phytosanitary certificates, EUR.1 forms, and health certificates for fresh produce and food exports.

Bulk agricultural freight

Bulk loads of grain, fertiliser, and feed, plus pallet freight for boxed produce — FTL and LTL options.

Agricultural Cargo We Transport

Fresh fruit & vegetables

Strawberries, tomatoes, oranges, and other fresh Portuguese produce exported to EU markets — temperature-controlled.

Wine grapes & winery logistics

Grape harvest transport from vineyard to winery, and finished wine export to distributors worldwide.

Olive oil export

Bottled and bulk olive oil exported from Portuguese producers to EU and international buyers.

Cork products

Wine corks and cork sheet exported from Alentejo and Algarve producers to global wine and construction industries.

Agricultural machinery

Tractors, harvesters, sprayers, and agricultural equipment transported between dealers, farms, and maintenance centres.

Fertilisers & agri-chemicals

Bagged or liquid fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides (ADR-classified) transported under appropriate regulations.

Reefer vehicle collects from farm or packhouse. Temperature monitored throughout transit.

Agricultural Freight Pricing Factors

Seasonal demand peaks

Harvest season (August–October for grapes, October–December for olives) sees demand spikes. Pre-booking reduces peak season premiums.

Refrigeration requirements

Reefer trucks for fresh produce add 40–70% to ambient road freight rates but are essential for maintaining produce quality.

Bulk vs palletised

Bulk agricultural cargo (grain, loose produce) may require tipping trailers or bulk containers — different pricing from palletised freight.

Farm location

Collection from rural farms, which may have narrow access roads or no loading dock, requires specialist small or medium vehicles.

Export certification

Phytosanitary inspections and health certificates from DGAV (Portuguese veterinary authority) take 1–5 days and add cost for fresh produce exports.

Fuel & refrigeration surcharges

Both diesel and refrigeration energy surcharges apply to reefer transport — typically 15–30% of base freight rate.

Agricultural Freight Savings

Season Pre-Book

Pre-season contract rates

Signing a harvest season contract in spring secures fixed rates and vehicle priority — typically 20–30% lower than spot rates in October.

Consolidated Loads

Groupage for smaller producers

Smaller farms can share refrigerated vehicle space with neighbouring producers heading to the same buyer or market.

Off-Season Rates

Off-peak wine & oil distribution

Bottled wine and olive oil exported in Q1–Q2 (post-harvest) travels at off-peak ambient freight rates — significantly cheaper.

Agricultural Transport Surcharges

Reefer (refrigerated) truck transport carries both a diesel surcharge and a refrigeration energy surcharge. During harvest peak season, capacity-demand surcharges may also apply from some carriers. Pre-season contracts lock in rates inclusive of surcharges to protect your agricultural export margins.

Agricultural Freight Timelines

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book harvest transport in advance?

Yes — and we strongly recommend it. Refrigerated vehicle capacity is heavily booked during the August–November harvest season in Portugal. Contact us in June or July to pre-book reefer capacity for your harvest transport.

What is a phytosanitary certificate and do I need one?

A phytosanitary certificate issued by DGAV (Direção-Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária) certifies that your plant-based products are free from pests and diseases. It is required for exports of fresh plants, fruits, and vegetables to many non-EU countries including the USA, Japan, and Australia.

Can you transport agricultural chemicals (ADR)?

Yes. Many fertilisers and crop protection chemicals are ADR-classified for road transport. Cargosender works with ADR-certified carriers. The shipper must provide accurate UN numbers and safety data sheets.

How do I get a volume discount?

Open a Cargosender Business Account and share your estimated monthly volume. Our team prepares a custom rate card within 24 hours. Volume discounts start from as little as 20 shipments per month.

What happens if my shipment is damaged?

Add Cargosender shipment protection at checkout. Claims are filed directly through your account dashboard and typically resolved within 7–10 business days.
