Shipping Wine Internationally
Alcohol shipping is heavily regulated — carrier acceptance, destination laws and packaging all matter.
Portugal produces some of the world's finest wines — Vinho Verde, Douro, Alentejo and Port — and there is strong international demand from private buyers, restaurants and wine merchants. Shipping wine internationally requires navigating carrier alcohol policies, destination country import laws, liquid containment packaging, and customs declarations. Not all couriers accept alcohol, and those that do require specific packaging and documentation. Destination matters enormously: EU countries have no alcohol import restrictions between member states, while countries like the UK require HMRC alcohol registration, the USA has state-by-state laws, and some countries prohibit alcohol imports entirely.

How to Pack Wine for Shipping
Choose wine-specific packaging
Use purpose-built wine shipper boxes with individual bottle dividers/cells. These are available from packaging suppliers in 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12-bottle configurations. Never use plain cardboard without proper cell dividers — bottles will break.
Wrap each bottle individually
Wrap each bottle in at least 2 layers of bubble wrap (minimum 80mm bubble), secured with tape. The bubble wrap must cover the entire bottle including the neck. This prevents bottle-to-bottle contact and absorbs impact.
Insert bottles into cells
Place each wrapped bottle in its own cell in the wine shipper box. The bottle should be snug — there should be no movement when you shake the box. Add extra bubble wrap padding if there is any gap.
Seal and double-box
Close and tape the inner wine shipper box, then place it inside a second outer box with at least 5cm of styrofoam or bubble wrap on all six sides. This double-box method is required by most carriers for alcohol and significantly reduces breakage.
Label correctly
Mark the outer box with 'FRAGILE' and 'THIS WAY UP' on all four sides. Include the commercial invoice detailing quantity, wine description, vintage, declared value and alcohol content (% ABV). Mark 'Alcoholic Beverages — Contains Glass' on the outside.
Customs & Declarations
Wine HS code: 2204 (wine of fresh grapes, including fortified wines) — specify the sub-code: 2204.21 (still wine <2L), 2204.29 (still wine >2L), 2204.10 (sparkling/Champagne). Port wine: 2204.21.06 or 2204.29 depending on volume. Your commercial invoice must state: product name, vintage, wine style (still/sparkling/fortified), alcohol content (% ABV), quantity (bottles and litres), declared value. EU destinations: no import duty, but local VAT applies. UK: 0% duty under UK-EU TCA, but UK excise duty applies (£2.67–£3.95 per 75cl bottle, payable by recipient). USA: alcohol import is regulated state-by-state — many states allow direct-to-consumer imports, others do not. Brazil: alcohol imports to Brazil by individuals are restricted to small personal quantities. UAE, India, Indonesia, Pakistan: alcohol imports are heavily restricted or prohibited.
Pro Tips
Use a specialist wine courier (Transgourmet, Wine-Dispatch) for large regular shipments — they have pre-arranged carrier alcohol agreements and specialist packaging.
Always check destination country alcohol import laws before booking — a carrier accepting the shipment does not mean the destination country does.
For EU destinations (Germany, France, Netherlands), DPD and GLS road services are cost-effective and handle wine well via road without airline liquid restrictions.
Insure wine shipments — standard carrier liability is based on weight (€20/kg for most carriers) which may be below your wine's actual value. Declare actual value and buy add-on insurance.
Temperature-sensitive vintages: avoid shipping wine in summer months to destinations with poor logistics infrastructure — heat damage is not covered by carrier insurance.
For UK shipments post-Brexit: make sure your invoice clearly states the goods originate in Portugal (EU) to claim 0% import duty under the UK-EU TCA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ship wine from Portugal internationally by courier?
Yes, but carrier acceptance depends on the destination country and whether you have a commercial alcohol shipper account. DHL Express, FedEx and UPS accept wine from licensed commercial shippers to most destinations. Consumer-to-consumer wine shipments are not accepted by most major couriers. Within the EU, DPD and GLS are straightforward.
What packaging is required to ship wine by courier?
Most carriers require: individual bottle bubble wrap (minimum 2 layers), wine shipper box with cell dividers (no bottle-to-bottle contact), and a double-box with 5cm padding on all sides. Single-box wine shipments are refused or travel at your risk — breakage claims are rejected without proper packaging.
What is the HS code for wine?
Wine is classified under HS heading 2204. Still wine in bottles under 2 litres is 2204.21; still wine in containers over 2 litres is 2204.29; sparkling wine is 2204.10. Port wine (fortified) typically falls under 2204.21.06. Always check the exact 8-digit EU/destination country sub-heading for precise customs classification.
Can I send wine to the USA from Portugal?
Shipping wine to the USA is complex — US alcohol law is regulated at the state level. Some states (California, New York, Oregon) permit direct-to-consumer wine imports. Others prohibit it entirely (Alabama, Utah, Mississippi). You need to verify the destination state's law and typically use a licensed US importer or direct-to-consumer permit. FedEx and UPS have licensed shipper programmes for US wine imports.
How much does it cost to ship wine from Portugal internationally?
A 6-bottle case (approx. 10 kg) to Germany typically costs €20–€40 by DPD/GLS road, €40–€70 by DHL Express. To the UK: €35–€60 by DPD, €60–€90 by DHL Express. To the USA: €80–€150 by FedEx/DHL. Compare live rates on Cargosender — exact prices depend on carrier surcharges for alcohol and insurance.
