Shipping Bicycles Internationally
Bicycles are large, awkward and volumetrically heavy โ the right courier and box size determines how much you pay.
Shipping a bicycle internationally is one of the more complex parcel logistics challenges. Bikes are large, awkwardly shaped and awkward to box โ but with the right preparation, most standard road, mountain and hybrid bicycles can ship as a single parcel with major couriers. The key challenge is volumetric weight: a bike box (typically 140ร80ร25cm) can have a volumetric weight of 56 kg, even if the bike itself weighs only 9 kg. You will pay for the volumetric weight. E-bikes with lithium batteries have additional restrictions. Carbon fibre frames require specialist packing. Budget โฌ50โโฌ180 for international shipping depending on destination and service level.
Carrier Acceptance
| Carrier | Accepted? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DHL Express | Conditions apply | Accepts bicycles within max dimension limits (300cm total, no single side >120cm). Volumetric weight applies. E-bikes: lithium battery restrictions apply โ check DHL DGR rules. |
| FedEx | Conditions apply | Accepts bicycles subject to size limits. Box must not exceed 274cm combined girth + length. Volumetric weight billing applies. E-bikes require DGR compliance for battery. |
| UPS | Conditions apply | Accepts bicycles up to 70kg actual weight. Maximum combined girth: 274cm. Volumetric weight applies. E-bikes with lithium batteries accepted with correct UN declaration. |
| DPD | Conditions apply | DPD road service accepts bikes within parcel size limits (typically 175cm per longest side). Check DPD country-specific size limits. More restrictive than express carriers. |
| GLS | No | GLS generally does not accept bicycles โ size dimensions typically exceed GLS parcel limits. Use DHL, FedEx or UPS for bike shipments. |
How to Pack Bicycles for Shipping
Get a bike-specific cardboard box
The ideal box is 150ร80ร25cm (a standard road/mountain bike box). Ask your local bike shop โ they receive bikes in these boxes and often give them away for free or sell for โฌ5. Alternatively, buy specialist bike shipping boxes online. Never use a too-small box that forces the bike in at an angle.
Disassemble partially
Remove both wheels, pedals (use a 15mm spanner โ left pedal is reverse thread), and handlebars (or turn handlebars sideways and secure to frame). Drop the saddle to its lowest position. This is the minimum required to fit a bike in a standard box.
Protect the frame and drivetrain
Wrap the frame in bubble wrap (2+ layers on all tubes). Protect the rear derailleur with a folded piece of cardboard taped around it โ this is the most commonly damaged part in transit. Wrap the fork ends (dropouts) with cardboard to prevent them bending if dropped.
Position components carefully
Place the frame in the box with the drive side (chain/gears) facing up. Position wheels on either side of the frame, padded with foam or old clothing. Place pedals, handlebars and any accessories in spaces between components, wrapped individually in bubble wrap.
Seal and measure accurately
Seal the box firmly with heavy-duty packing tape (minimum 50mm wide). Measure all three dimensions accurately โ carriers use these to calculate volumetric weight. Measure the actual box, not the bike size. Weigh the complete packed box. Label with both sender and recipient addresses on top of the box.
Customs & Declarations
Bicycles HS code: 8712 (bicycles, other cycles, not motorised). E-bikes (with electric motor): 8714.99 or 8711 depending on motor classification. EU countries: no customs clearance required. UK: 0% import duty on bicycles under UK-EU TCA (if of EU/Portuguese origin). USA: 0% import duty on most bicycle types (US Harmonised Tariff 8712). Australia: 5% import duty on bicycles over AUD1,000. Brazil: 20% import duty applies. For a used personal bicycle being sent to an individual (not commercial resale), many customs authorities apply a reduced personal effects rate โ include a note on the invoice stating 'Used personal bicycle โ not for resale'. For new commercial bike exports, include the full invoice price.
Pro Tips
Calculate volumetric weight before booking: (length cm ร width cm ร height cm) รท 5,000 = volumetric kg. A 150ร80ร25cm bike box = 60kg volumetric weight โ even if the bike weighs 9kg, you pay for 60kg.
Use DHL Express or UPS for international bike shipping โ they have the highest size allowances and the most experience handling oversize parcels.
For carbon fibre frames: add extra foam padding around all carbon tubes. Carbon can crack from point-load impacts even without visible external damage to the box.
E-bikes: remove the battery if it exceeds 100Wh and ship it separately under DGR rules, or use a specialist e-bike courier.
Take photos of the disassembled bike and packed box before handing to the courier โ essential for any damage claim.
Consider a specialist bike courier service (Bikeflights, Bikeshark) for frequent or high-value bicycle shipments โ they have pre-negotiated carrier rates and specialist bike claims handling.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ship a bicycle internationally by courier?
Yes. DHL Express, FedEx and UPS all accept bicycles subject to size and weight limits. The bike must be partially disassembled (wheels and pedals removed at minimum) and boxed. Volumetric weight will apply โ a standard bike box (150ร80ร25cm) has a volumetric weight of approximately 60kg, which is typically what you'll be charged for.
How do I calculate the cost of shipping a bicycle?
Courier costs for bicycles are based on volumetric weight, not actual weight. A typical road/mountain bike box (150ร80ร25cm) = 60kg volumetric. At DHL Express rates, this costs approximately โฌ80โโฌ130 to Germany, โฌ100โโฌ180 to the UK, โฌ150โโฌ250 to the USA. Compare live rates on Cargosender with the exact dimensions of your packed box.
Can I ship an e-bike internationally?
E-bikes are more complex due to lithium battery regulations. Most carriers accept e-bikes but require: (1) battery under 100Wh โ standard courier, (2) battery 100โ300Wh โ requires DGR declaration and carrier approval, (3) battery over 300Wh โ typically not accepted by standard couriers. Check with DHL or UPS for e-bike specific rules on your route.
Do I need to remove the wheels to ship a bicycle?
Yes. Both wheels must be removed to fit a standard bicycle in a shipping box. You also need to remove the pedals (left pedal has reverse thread โ turn clockwise to remove) and either remove or rotate the handlebars. This reduces the boxed dimensions from approximately 180cm to 150cm in length, which is within most courier size limits.
How much does it cost to ship a bike to the UK from Portugal?
Shipping a standard road or mountain bike from Portugal to the UK typically costs โฌ80โโฌ160 by DHL Express or UPS, depending on service level and current fuel surcharges. DPD road service is cheaper (โฌ50โโฌ90) but may have more restrictive size limits for bicycle boxes. Compare current live rates on Cargosender with your actual box dimensions.
